There are rarely homes for sale in Point Reyes Station, But, when one of the gorgeous beach homes in this unincorporated community does become available, there is often a lot of competition.
Some buyers just want to purchase a house to use as a vacation rental. They buy for people looking to take a break from the daily grind. The people who enjoy spending some quality time soaking up the sun and spending their time looking at the natural splendor. Others hope to find a place they can live in year round so they can join the tight-knit beach town community.
There are few places on Earth that can boast the view and great climate of Point Reyes real estate.
The former homeland of the Miwok tribe, Point Reyes Station has gone through several changes in its history. The settlement here was once called Olema Station and was a port on Tomales Bay as well as the railroad terminus for the North Pacific Coast Railroad line that connected Cazadero to the Sausalito Ferry.
Sometime between 1875 and 1882 the town changed its name to Point Reyes, and the Point Reyes post office opened in 1882. In 1891, the town changed its name to Marin before later changing it back to Point Reyes, and then finally to Point Reyes Station.
When the railroad eventually left, most of the town’s population moved elsewhere. But, the town held on and even thrived, becoming a tourist stop thanks to the beach, the areas national and state parks, and the highway.
There are only 848 people in Point Reyes Station and the median income for the area is $57,292, low for Marin County standards, but higher than the national average.
Remarkably, two weekly newspapers, the West Marin Citizen and the Point Reyes Light, serve the people of Point Reyes Station. The Point Reyes Light received a Pulitzer Prize in 1979 for it reporting on the Synanon cult. The two newspapers give Point Reyes Station one of the highest per capita rates of media coverage in the nation.
Point Reyes Station, CA real estate is almost exclusively of the ocean view variety and does not come up for sale often.
Point Reyes Station does not have any school infrastructure, and any students attend school in nearby towns. It is part of the Shoreline Unified School District. The district has three elementary schools, including Inverness Elementary, and Tomales High School. The schools all boast small class sizes and rigorous academics.
