YOUR BEST GUIDE TO STINSON BEACH REAL ESTATE
MARIN.COM » YOUR #1 SOURCE FOR STINSON BEACH REAL ESTATE
Stinson Beach, CA real estate is limited due to strict Marin County land use policies and the proximity of the town to state and federal parks. People looking to buy in Stinson Beach often are looking for either a vacation home for themselves or a beach house they will rent out to tourists. But, there are a hardy few that fall in love with the ocean, Mount Tamalpais, and the small, close-knit community.
It is not uncommon for Stinson Beach real estate to start a bidding war. Houses that do come to market are quickly purchased.
Stinson Beach was part of the coastal Miwok territory, but little evidence points to it being used or visited often. The unspoiled beach and rolling green foothills did attract ranchers in the 1800’s looking for safe places to graze their herds.
For decades, the area was only accessible by boat, by horseback trail from San Rafael, or by foot along the Dipsea trail. When the dirt road to Sausalito was completed in 1870, a small tent city sprung up among the willow groves.
The city wouldn’t amount to much until refugees from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake came to the town and built the area up. The two biggest landholders were Rose and Nathan Stinson, who owned one of the earliest hotels. When the town got its post office in 1916 it needed an official name, and Stinson Beach was chosen.
The beach itself was always considered a treasure and was first a Marin County park in 1939. The State of California took over ownership in 1950, and the park was made part of the Golden Gate Recreation Area is now managed by the National Parks Service.
Stinson Beach has a year-round population of 632 people and a median family income of $105,000. Stinson Beach’s population swells in the summer as modern day refugees from San Francisco and other major cities come to enjoy the cool ocean breeze, chilly water, and the warm sand. While the town is small, when there are homes for sale in Stinson Beach, there is stiff competition for them.
Stinson Beach is part of the Bolinas-Stinson Union School District. Students in the small district attend Stinson Beach School between kindergarten and second grade and Bolinas School for grades three through eight. Both schools have excellent academic reputations and are ranked highly in the state.
Older students usually attend Mount Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley, one of California’s best high schools. Mill Valley also has a few private schools that welcome students from Stinson Beach.
