The town was originally called Big Lagoon because of a large freshwater lagoon that later disappeared as a result of the dairy farming activity, Muir Woods was renamed in honor of California’s greatest conservationist.
There are only 310 people that call Muir Woods home. The median income for the area is $125,402. The residents are a mix of beach house owners and owners of the local businesses, the most well-known of which is the Pelican Inn.
There aren’t many homes for sale in Muir Woods because the county’s strict land use laws. But when a home does come up for sale, it doesn’t stay long on the market, and bidding wars are not unheard of.
Muir Beach is part of the Mill Valley School District. Children attend either Tamalpais Elementary School if they are in grades kindergarten through fifth, Mill Valley Middle School if they are fifth through eighth graders and Tamalpais High School after that.
The Mill Valley schools are highly regarded and have excellent academic reputations. Some students elect to attend private schools, also usually located in nearby Mill Valley.
